Sigiriya

Sigiriya is a formidable rock that rises majestically above the surrounding scrub jungle. The rock was once the stronghold of King Kasyapa, a young monarch who sought refuge at Sigiriya after committing patricide. Modern day archaeologists consider Sigiriya to be a feat of sheer engineering genius. The ancient Sigiriya Fort was a masterpiece of palaces, water gardens, pools and audience halls.

A steep set of stairs leads visitors up Sigiriya. The rock face is famed for its frescoes of beautiful maidens. A Mirror Wall that dates back 1000 years is probably one of the world's oldest graffiti walls. The ascent to the palace, located at the summit, is past a set of giant lion paws. The summit contains ruins of the ancient palace and the view from this point is worth the climb.
