‘Erabadu’ flowers, stark against the clear blue skies; the resounding call of the ‘Koel’; the distant chants and drums drifting in from the village - in April, Sri Lanka celebrates the dawning of a New Year with age old traditions believed to bring good fortune throughout the year.
Our Avurudu Cluster rooms capture the spirit of this special time in the motifs and colours of the décor. The coffee table represents the traditional ‘rabana’ drum – handcrafted lampshades are akin to the clay water pots. The cosy rooms are naturally cool, with light and air filtering through the latticed ‘windows’ high on the walls. The private veranda is perfect to relax and savour some ‘Avurudu’ sweetmeats.
The rays of the evening sun paint the trees with gold – these giants, hundreds of years old, with branches reaching high and far, demand awe and reverence. The little streamlet below is unfazed, as it winds gently on its way. The cicadas hiding in the vines strike up their chorus; a Night Heron watches, motionless.
Another ordinary day at a village river bank, but at our ‘Ganga Addara’ rooms, your stay will be far from ‘everyday’. The serene hues and subdued light of a hidden stream is matched in the rooms to give you cool, cosy comfort with twin sized beds and all the requisite amenities. The private terrace is just right for a quiet read – or a little nap.
